Past Newberry Award Recipients

Nominated by BOC Boad Members Brad Watson, Abel Guevara and Cameron Stewart, Powers had a direct impact on defining Board member responsibilities and roles, with particular emphasis on fiduciary responsibilities as well as how the Board and Staff worked together. Serving for more than a decade as both an Executive Committee Member and Member of the Board, he brought best practices from the broader nonprofit community including Board self-evaluations, Investment Policy Statements, and other management reporting – all of which continue to strengthen BOC. Powers served in the United States Air Force for 29 years as the equivalent of a civilian health care executive both in the US and abroad. He was nominated for multiple non-combat medals with the highest being the Legion of Merit twice awarded. He was also the COO for the American Nurses Association, has been an Independent Healthcare Consultant, and was Director-Plans & Programs for the Dayton-Area Graduate Medical Education Consortium (DAGMEC).

Nominated by BOC Board Member Angela Presley, PhD, BOCPD, COF, Miller’s 30-year dedication to BOC has had a lasting impact on the field of orthotics and prosthetics. Starting as a volunteer, she helped develop BOC’s orthotist clinical simulation and multiple-choice exam teams, later serving on the Board for six years. Miller was instrumental in establishing BOC’s orthotic fitter (COF) and mastectomy fitter (CMF) certifications in 2000 and 2001. In 2007, she joined BOC as Facility Accreditation Manager, later advancing to Chief Credentialing Officer and Special Assistant to the CEO. Her leadership was recognized with the NAAOP Leadership Award and a place among O&P News’ 175 leading innovators.

John Kenney, PhD, BOCO, past Newberry Award winner and former Chair of BOC’s Board of Directors, nominated McLeod for the 2022 Newberry Award. McLeod’s volunteerism with BOC spans many years. Beginning in 2005, she served as a test development volunteer for BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) exams and, in 2007, she joined the Board of Directors, lending her expertise to BOC’s Board for nine years, where she served on the Finance & Investment and Audit committees. Trained in 1985 as a BOC CMF by Jim Newberry himself, she tirelessly promoted BOC’s Mastectomy Fitter Certification through her personal contacts, representation of BOC at numerous trade shows and participation in BOC certificant outreach.

Nominated by 2018 Newberry Award winner Jim Hewlett,  Kenney has a long history with BOC. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for eight years, in various roles including Chair and Vice Chair, and has dedicated countless hours as part of BOC’s O&P Alliance Team and as a volunteer with the BOC test development group. After becoming a BOC Registered Orthotic Fitter in 1995 (and later earning the Certified Orthotic Fitter credential, passing the first exam provided for the certification), Kenney diligently learned from other orthotists and became a BOC-Certified Orthotist in 2005.

James “Jim” L. Hewlett, BOCO is the second recipient of the Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service.

Hewlett was nominated by Newberry’s widow, Lynne, who describes Hewlett as “one of the most qualified, generous and patient teachers I ever have been blessed to observe.”

A past member, secretary, vice chairman and chairman of BOC’s board of directors, Hewlett played a key role in developing BOC’s original accreditation standards and worked as a subject matter expert for certification exam development. Serving as an accreditation site surveyor for the past decade, he remains an integral part of BOC’s team of survey professionals. Read the news release.

Harry “JR” Brandt, BOCO, CO, LO is the first recipient of the Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service.

In this photo, Brandt (right) receives the award from BOC Board Chair L. Bradley “Brad” Watson, BOCO, BOCP, LPO. The award was presented to him on September 7, 2017, during the 2017 AOPA World Congress in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brandt’s prestigious career has spanned more than 36 years in the O&P profession, beginning as an orthotic technician and most recently as a pediatric practitioner and Director of Orthotics for Collier Orthotics and Prosthetics. A former member and chairman of the BOC board of directors, Brandt was instrumental in developing BOC’s accreditation process.

He also supervised BOC’s site surveyors, was a test development volunteer and served as a representative to the O&P Alliance. Throughout his career, Brandt has demonstrated expert knowledge of O&P, specifically of Medicare and other accreditation standards. He is well-known for providing outstanding service to his patients and extraordinary dedication to mentoring others in his field. Read the news release.
