A longtime practitioner, BOC Board member and leader, the late James Newberry, Jr., BOCP, BOCO, BOCPD devoted himself to BOC and the orthotic and prosthetic profession. In memory of his life and legacy, BOC established the Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service in 2016.
This honor recognizes outstanding individuals who perform extraordinary service to BOC and who live out the superior example modeled by Jim during his more than four decades in the O&P field.
Winners might include—but are not limited to—current or former Board members, test development volunteers, vendors/business partners, certificants, personnel from BOC-accredited facilities, consultants and staff members.
Recognition will include a commemorative plaque; an invitation to attend a Board of Directors dinner or similar public event where the award will be presented; featured news item on the BOC website; and additional recognition resulting from the distribution of a news release. All winners will also be listed on commemorative signage at BOC headquarters.

For those interested in nominating themselves or a colleague for The Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service, we thank you! To qualify for the award, individuals must have a proven history of service and volunteerism with BOC. Anyone may submit a nomination, which should tell about the nominee and answer the following questions:
- Why does this individual deserve this award?
- What examples can you provide of the nominee’s service to BOC and to the community of stakeholders served by BOC?
- What has been the impact of this nominee’s service?
Nominations should include names and contact information for three others who know the nominee and can attest to his/ her outstanding service. The deadline to submit nominations is September 6, 2019.
About Jim Newberry
A graduate of New York University, Jim began his career as an orthotist/prosthetist while serving in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he joined Mahnke’s Orthotics and Prosthetics in Oakland Park, Florida, where he spent more than 40 years as owner, practitioner and director of orthotics/prosthetics.
For more than 30 years, Jim served BOC in numerous capacities. He held many leadership positions for the BOC board of directors, including chair, and was interim executive director after the retirement of BOC’s founder, Donald O. Fedder, DrPH, MPH, BSP, FAPhA. Jim was a facility accreditation site surveyor, a video practical exam reviewer and a test development volunteer for BOC’s orthotist, prosthetist and pedorthist exams.
Newberry Award Recipients
Harry “JR” Brandt, BOCO, CO, LO is the first recipient of the Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service.
In this photo, Brandt (right) receives the award from BOC Board Chair L. Bradley “Brad” Watson, BOCO, BOCP, LPO. The award was presented to him on September 7, 2017 during the 2017 AOPA World Congress in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Brandt’s prestigious career has spanned more than 36 years in the O&P profession, beginning as an orthotic technician and most recently as pediatric practitioner and Director of Orthotics for Collier Orthotics and Prosthetics. A former member and chairman of the BOC board of directors, Brandt was instrumental in developing BOC’s accreditation process.
He also supervised BOC’s site surveyors, was a test development volunteer and served as a representative to the O&P Alliance. Throughout his career, Brandt has demonstrated expert knowledge of O&P, specifically of Medicare and other accreditation standards. He is well-known for providing outstanding service to his patients and extraordinary dedication to mentoring others in his field.
James “Jim” L. Hewlett, BOCO is the second recipient of the Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service.
Hewlett was nominated by Newberry’s widow, Lynne, who describes Hewlett as “one of the most qualified, generous and patient teachers I ever have been blessed to observe.”
A past member, secretary, vice chairman and chairman of BOC’s board of directors, Hewlett played a key role in developing BOC’s original accreditation standards and worked as a subject matter expert for certification exam development. Serving as an accreditation site surveyor for the past decade, he remains an integral part of BOC’s team of survey professionals.
