BOC’s 2022 Newberry Award winner, Theresa “Terri” McLeod, CMF, COF
The Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC) is pleased to announce Theresa “Terri” McLeod, CMF, COF as the 2022 recipient of the Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service. John Kenney, PhD, BOCO, past Newberry Award winner and former Chair of BOC’s Board of Directors, nominated McLeod.
McLeod’s volunteerism with BOC spans many years. Beginning in 2005, she served as a test development volunteer for BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) exams and, in 2007, she joined the Board of Directors, lending her expertise to BOC’s Board for nine years, where she served on the Finance & Investment and Audit committees.
As a Board Member, Terri provided tremendous credibility to BOC. She managed the prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Evelyn H. Lauder Boutique and was extremely well-known and highly respected in the post-mastectomy community. Through her personal contacts, representation of BOC at numerous trade shows and participation in BOC certificant outreach, she tirelessly promoted BOC’s Mastectomy Fitter Certification.
Trained in 1985 as a BOC CMF by Jim Newberry himself, McLeod later specialized her practice within the post-mastectomy product manufacturing field, performing more than 1,000 fittings per year. When the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began requiring mastectomy fitters to obtain certification in 2009, McLeod guided others in her profession toward certification so they could continue providing patients with the fittings they needed.
“I was proud to wear my BOC certification pin,” McLeod says. “My life’s work has been taking the time to help the women I served live better lives after surgery.”
McLeod’s level of compassion combined with her work ethic earned her numerous honors from her employers, including Territory Manager of the Year and, on two separate occasions, Fitter of the Year. Now, she’s receiving BOC’s highest honor.
“Terri has shown the same kind of passion for and commitment to BOC that defined our good friend Jim Newberry,” says BOC’s President & CEO Claudia Zacharias, MBA, CAE. “Our Board is proud to award her with this honor.”
The Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service is named in honor of longtime BOC practitioner, board member and leader James Newberry, Jr., BOCP, BOCO, BOCPD, who passed away in 2016. The award recognizes outstanding individuals who perform extraordinary service to BOC, the community of stakeholders BOC serves and those who live out the superior example modeled by Newberry during his more than four decades in the field of orthotics and prosthetics.
